Mattresses manufactured today use greater amounts of filling materials such as cotton, foam, wool, and silk. The ridge in the center is a result of the filling materials compressing in the independent sleeping areas of each partner.
Millions of mattresses and box springs reach the end of their lives in California every year. Fortunately, almost 90 percent of each used mattress is recyclable, and certain components such as steel, wood, cotton, and polyurethane have positive market value. State law requires retailers to collect this fee on any mattress and box spring sale to fund the state's mattress recycling program.
